What happens when chiropractic “meets the press”?

What happens when chiropractic “meets the press”? A chiropractor’s comments about a New York Times article about chiropractic Good morning, New Day! Last week I became aware of an article about chiropractic that was published in The New York Times this past May (not sure why I didn’t know about this until now!)  It’s not every day the chiropractic gets ANY press (let alone good press).  This article is noteworthy because the main message is at least somewhat favorable concerning the benefits of chiropractic. Despite the relatively lukewarm tone of the article and decidedly limited perspective it shares, any story coming from a major news source that helps the public learn more about the life changing, money saving benefits of chiropractic care is a major victory! The article, titled “For Bad Backs, It May Be Time to Rethink Biases About Chiropractors, can be seen here: https://mobile.nytimes.com/2017/05/01/upshot/for-bad-backs-its-time-to-rethink-biases-about-chiropractors.html?mcubz=1&referer=http%3A%2F%2Fm.facebook.com It is important for me, as ... ...Read More...

When you experience better, DO better

/ / Blog
When you experience better, DO better Make a decision to be in the game Good day, New Day community! We’ve all probably heard the quote, “When you know better, do better.” According to the internet, this quote can be traced to Maya Angelou.  The idea, at it’s most simple, is not to let the “I don’t know” hold you back from taking action and moving forward in your life. It is in that process of boldly moving forward and experiencing yourself as powerful that we learn what needs to be learned and make the necessary course corrections. So often, I meet people who want to get better– whether that means getting better sleep, being more productive, feeling less pain and tension, etc– but they stop themselves from moving forward with a plan that’s being recommended because they “don’t know ______” (insert whatever it is that typically stops them from taking action). “I ... ...Read More...

Introducing our Practice Member of the Month – August 2017

/ / Blog
Congratulations to Dan L., our August 2017 Practice Member of the Month! We are so grateful for who you are, the progress that you continue to make, and the commitment you have made to your spinal health and wellness. You are making the world a better place! This month, we honor you! Dan L. has been in care with Dr. Katie since July 2015 Why I came to New Day:   When I found New Day I was going through a divorce and at a point in my life that I knew I needed to make serious changes. Something bigger was driving me to find anything I could to get my life back on track. I came across someone talking about Network Care (Network Spinal Analysis), and I look into it a little bit more online and it sounded like something I needed. I was open to trying something new for ... ...Read More...

What if my problem is too serious for Network Care?

What if my problem is too serious for Network Care? Why you can’t afford to quit the financial literacy class Good morning, sunshines! I’m sure there are plenty of times when it’s easy for all of us to pat ourselves on the backs for being proactive in our health and wellness.  When we go to the gym or eat a kale salad, we know we are doing something for ourselves that will help us not just now, but in the future.  Similarly, by investing in care for your spine and nervous system through chiropractic, you get to feel good now and you are making an investment in yourself that research shows pays off in the long term, in terms of lower medical bills, medication use, and the like. But what happens when the going gets tough?  We wake up and find ourselves in extreme pain and don’t know why.  We ... ...Read More...

Congratulations to Cailtin N., our July 2017 Practice Member of the Month! We are so grateful for who you are, the progress that you continue to make, and the commitment you have made to your spinal health and wellness. You are making the world a better place! This month, we honor you! Caitlin N. has been in care with Dr. Katie since February 2017 Why I came to New Day:   I heard about Network Spinal Analysis and was referred to Dr. Katie by the Epic Impact Team. Zach, who I was coaching with at the time, told me to visit Dr. Katie and ask her to “show me the universe!” My chiropractic results: I have experienced some absolutely life-changing results already during my time as a New Day practice member. Not only do I feel taller and experience better posture, I also feel more clear-headed, energized, and optimistic. At my ... ...Read More...

Secrets to sweet smelling breath (with essential oils!)

/ / Blog
Good day, New Day oils enthusiasts! As you have been discovering, essential oils bring all kinds of magic into our lives.  Some of that magic comes in the form of emotional, mental, and spiritual wellbeing.  And some of that magic comes in the form of the most practical everyday uses. If you need a go-to for fresh breath that is actually GOOD for your health, I have a couple of suggestions for you! 1. For on-the-fly breath freshening, reach for your bottle of peppermint essential oil rather than gums, mints, and mouthwashes, which usually contain sugar or an artificial sweetener.   Sugars and artificial sweeteners can wreak all kinds of havoc on your dental health (not to mention you overall health), by dehydrating your mouth and encouraging the growth of bacteria between the teeth, in the gums, and on the tongue. Instead, dab a little peppermint oil on your finger ... ...Read More...

“Why don’t you take insurance?”

“Why don’t you take insurance?” Some obvious and maybe not so obvious reasons why not Happy morning, New Day community! As you have probably noticed, I often like to use these blogs to address your frequently asked questions about chiropractic, Network Care, and what makes our office different. We don’t always get a lot of questions about why we choose not to take insurance in our office, because I think for some of us with experience with insurance companies, the answers seem obvious. Of course there’s the sheer amount of time and effort that myself and Amber would need to put forth in order to receive (what little) insurance companies might be willing to pay for your care.  This extra time and effort devoted to something that has nothing to do with the quality of your care or experience at New Day would be prohibitive in and of itself.  But this ... ...Read More...

You’re allowed to have a bad day (and so am I!)

You’re allowed to have a bad day! (and so am I!) Good morning, bright New Day community! Long term relationships require dedication, commitment, and understanding.  We all know this.  We all take this for granted when it comes to our relationships with family, friends, and significant others.  We may even realize that these same ways of being are optimal for our relationship with our boss, employees, or coworkers. It might be more rare that we consider that the same is true for other long term relationships.  Even the ones we might think of as less necessary to our day-to-day wellbeing. When we screw up in relationships or the other person does, especially these relationships that don’t involve family or a significant other, it can seem a lot easier to leave than to stay and work things out. I was recently confronted by this choice involving the place where I buy cat ... ...Read More...

Introducing our Practice Member of the Month for June, 2017!

Congratulations to Kelly S, our June 2017 Practice Member of the Month! We are so grateful for who you are, the progress that you continue to make, and the commitment you have made to your spinal health and wellness. You are making the world a better place! This month, we honor you! Kelly S. has been with New Day since June, 2016 Why I came to New Day:   I heard about Network Spinal Analysis from my twin sister who lives on the west coast where this care is more common. After a minor car accident, I took the opportunity to come see what it was all about. The care made very short work of muscle tension related to the accident and then after that, I was hooked. I decided to bring my infant son to Dr. Katie after he was treated for multiple ear infections. Chiropractic care made medical sense ... ...Read More...

Bon voyage! Best of luck!

Bon voyage! Best of luck! New Day Practice Members lighting up the world wherever they go Good afternoon, New Day! Something that I didn’t think much about when I opened New Day 4 years ago is that part of my job would sometimes be saying “goodbye.” This may seem strange that this came as surprising to me, coming from someone for whom changing jobs, changing schools, changing careers, moving away, “starting over,” and saying goodbye had been a normal part of life since childhood.  In fact, when I was a kid I used to complain that it always seemed like we were moving just when I was finally becoming one of the cool kids at my school! The most permanent-feeling thing I have ever had in my life actually isn’t a home, a location, or even a person.  In a lot of ways it’s Network Care!  When I started receiving ... ...Read More...

This summer, play a little!

/ / Blog
Happy weekend, Essential Oils Enthusiasts 🙂 You know the saying.  “All work and no play makes _____ a very dull boy!” These days, thanks to many of us having the ability to do work from everywhere at any time, it can be easy to be all about the work. It can be even easier to be all work and no play for those of us who built pretty strong identities around being serious, hardworking people.  I’m sure there are a lot of us (and especially here in the Midwest).  Like any identity, it starts out as helpful but can be limiting. Take me, for example. I always had this idea about myself that there was something inherently serious and hardworking about me. Starting as a very young child, I compared myself to my little brother (only 1 year younger than me!) and I concluded that I was serious, mature, and generally devoid of silly, ... ...Read More...

Why “adjustment”? Your questions– answered!

/ / Blog
Why do you call it an “adjustment”? Your questions, answered! Good evening, New Day!  I hope you had an amazing weekend and enjoyed the beautiful Chicago weather 🙂 How often do I get to say that? 😉 Today I want to address a common question about chiropractic (most of my blogs address questions from you about your care, so keep them coming!)  Like so many questions about chiropractic and Network Care, this is one I can DEFINITELY relate to having had. Why do they call it an “adjustment”? Truthfully, this was something that always rubbed me the wrong way about chiropractic, both when I was first starting in care (circa 2001), and more and more so over the coming years. When I first heard “adjustment,” I pictured the bones of my spine being pushed back to where they were “supposed” to be.  I heard “my body is being bad, making mistakes, ... ...Read More...

Introducing our Practice Member of the Month for May 2017

We are so grateful for who you are, the progress that you continue to make, and the commitment you have made to your spinal health and wellness. You are making the world a better place! Joseph G. has been in care with Dr. Katie since January 2014! Why I came to New Day:   A serious auto accident on top of multiple other traumas and injuries had left my body most discombobulated and pain ridden.  I’ve been to at least 30 different body workers and healers over the years trying to put it all back together, but in the end, Network Chiropractic and Dr. Katie has been the steady treatment that has left me feeling whole and happy in my body most of the time.  I had been to other network providers, but Dr. K is the one that really helped get me there.  She works at a very integrative ... ...Read More...

Renovation Progress Update! PLUS More Changes at New Day 🙂

Renovation Progress Update! PLUS More Changes at New Day 🙂 Good morning, New Day!  Hope you had a wonderful Mother’s Day weekend. I wanted to take the opportunity to share with you a progress report on the renovation of the kitchen area at New Day, and let you know about a couple of other exciting changes that are near. As you may remember from a recent blog, or have otherwise learned since then, on April 7th a plumber cut into a pipe inside the ceiling of our office, destroying the cabinets and floor of the kitchen area. Even though at many times I’ve been able to see the big picture and keep my spirits up about the reorganization that was thrust upon us, the whole situation has been quite stressful and taxing on me on a day to day basis.  At times, it’s really interfered with my ability to be ... ...Read More...

Left side, right side. Good side, bad side? What’s wrong with me, anyway?

Left side, right side. Good side, bad side? What’s wrong with me, anyway? Brightness and light to you, New Day!  Thanks for opening 🙂 Left side, right side.  Good side, bad side?  Sounds like a Dr. Seuss verse, right? I want to discuss a topic I get asked about often, both as practice members are new starting care, as well as at all different points along the journey that is choosing chiropractic care as a lifetime, wellness supporting routine. “My left side is always the problem!” “IT’S my right shoulder!” “But I thought my left leg is short and the problems are on the left!” “It’s ALWAYS my right ankle.” “Normally my right side is my bad side, but now it’s my left?!  What’s wrong with me now?!” Any of these ever sound like you?  Do you ever feel like you can’t rest until you figure out the answers to ... ...Read More...

We are so grateful for who you are, the progress that you continue to make, and the commitment you have made to your spinal health and wellness. You are making the world a better place! Casey H. has been in care with Dr. Katie since August 2016! We honor you this month and thank you for being part of our New Day community! *** Why I came to New Day:   My friend, Kelly N. invited me to a New Day Community Dinner and I was her guest. Surprisingly, Amber was there also (we had just met at a social gathering a few weeks before), and she had briefly explained a little bit about the holistic chiropractic office where she worked. At the Community Dinner I was offered a free new patient appointment, and I decided I would give it a try.   My chiropractic results: I’ve been in care ... ...Read More...

Sometimes we choose reorganization. . .

. . . And sometimes it’s thrust upon us! New Day Plumbing Mishap as Fuel for Reorganization Good evening, New Day! It’s been quite an exciting past few days. As those of you who came in for care on Saturday will already know, reorganization was thrust upon the New Day office this past Friday morning. It all began Friday morning when I needed to come in to the office to allow a plumber to cut into the ceiling in the adjusting room.  This needed to happen to address a plumbing problem in the unit upstairs. I won’t lie– I definitely was not thrilled about any of this.  Not the coming in on my day off (“for something that has nothing to do with me!”), not that Diane and Amber had to move adjusting tables, artwork, and the like, to make way for drywall that would be falling.  Not that I needed to ... ...Read More...

Introducing our Practice Member of the Month – March 2017

We are so grateful for who you are, the progress that you continue to make, and the commitment you have made to your spinal health and wellness. You are making the world a better place! We honor you this month and thank you for being part of our New Day community! Jessica L has been in care with Dr. Katie since December 2016 Why I came to New Day:   I had received Network Care while in graduate school in Massachusetts and loved it! When I began there I had never received regular chiropractic care – but I realize that this type of chiropractic integrated more than just adjusting my spine. That practice brought in elements of reiki, chiropractic, and breath work. It was easy for me to connect this type of care with my meditation and yoga practice – two very important self-care practices for myself. When I moved ... ...Read More...

Trust Issues?

Trust Issues? As New Day turns 4, we thank you for trusting us Good day to you, New Day! New Day is almost 4 years old!!  Can you believe it?? Thinking back on the 4 years I’ve had in practice, one of the many things I feel is gratitude for the TRUST you have placed in us.  It’s not always easy.  According to a recent article in Psychology Today, “It’s become more and more difficult to remain vulnerable, trusting, and open to life in this era of uncertainty, global upheaval, divorce, and disrupted family life.” They also report that, “A number of psychologists recently reported that, over the past 10 years, there has been an unprecedented rise in trust issues among couples who seek counseling.” When I consider what it is to trust in the world today, it amazes me to think that 4 years ago when some of you met a ... ...Read More...
